How to Join a Tumblr Blog

Anyone can access and view a public Tumblr blog, but to join a blog you’ll need to follow it with your own Tumblr account.

Tumblr integrates social networking features with its blog-hosting and content-management service, so joining a blog by following allows you to connect with other Tumblr users and receive notifications when they update their Tumblr blogs.

To join a Tumblr blog, create your own Tumblr account and use the Follow tool on the Tumblr dashboard page.

Launch your Web browser and go to Tumblr.com.

  1. Click the “Sign Up” button in the top right-hand corner of the page. Enter your email address and preferred password into the applicable input boxes. Type a name for your preferred Tumblr blog address URL into the “URL” input field. Type just one word and Tumblr will append this with the tumblr.com suffix; for example, “myblog.tumblr.com”.
  2. Click the green “Start Posting” button to sign in to Tumblr with your new account.
  3. Click the “Add” button under the “Following” tab on your Tumblr dashboard page.
  4. Find Tumblr blogs that you want to join by browsing through the Tumblr blog categories on the right-hand side of the page. Hover your mouse pointer over the blog’s image, then click the “Follow” button to join and follow the blog.
  5. Locate and join Tumblr blogs written by your contacts by clicking the “People You Know” tab in the top menu. Enter your email address and password for Hotmail, Yahoo! or AOL into the relevant input boxes. Click the green “Look Up Contacts” button. Tumblr accesses your email contacts and displays any Tumblr blogs authored by a contact. To join and follow a blog, hover your mouse pointer over the blog’s image, then click “Follow.”
  6. Go to a known Tumblr blog in your Web browser. Click the “Follow” button in the top right-hand corner of the blog’s homepage to join and follow the blog. Alternatively, go to Tumblr.com/following and enter a Tumblr blog URL, username or email address into the input field to find and follow a specific blog or user.
